You have seen some posts on Facebook from friends concerned that their private information will be shared with everyone, because of new privacy policies. The viral status update some of your friends are posting has instructions on how you should change your settings to keep their information private.
Those instructions are incorrect and do nothing to keep their information from being seen by others.
If you want to keep your information private, including status updates and comments, you must change who you share them with.
When you update your status, look for the audience option. The default is "public," meaning anything you post can be seen by anyone, and I mean anyone. You can change that to share only with friends or friends except acquaintances. You can also build lists of your friends and share only with the people on the lists. Then, whether a friend comments, likes or shares the post, it can only be seen by the audience you've chosen.
There are a lot of options within your privacy settings. It's good to go back through that from time to time to make any changes. And take a look at your activity log. If you see anything there you don't want shared with the world, you have options to hide it.
But just like on the Internet itself, it is impossible to hide on Facebook, unless you block the one you're hiding from or don't do facebook at all.
