"By small and simple things are great things brought to pass."The Elkmont based Coupon Patrol selects service projects throughout the year to give back to the community. Their fall service project to support the "Help our Homeless Veterans and Citizens" program illustrated how small things do accomplish amazing things. The Patrol donated seven car loads of goods to this cause. Some of our area's homeless veterans and citizens now have some supplies they need to survive thanks to the generosity of others.
The "patrol" teaches shoppers how to shop savvy and save money by couponing. Group leaders said they decided it is time to "pay it forward" by reaching out in the community.
The items donated include everything from water and food to clothing and hygiene items. The founder of The Coupon Patrol says it's more about saving money at the grocery store.
"I teach them how to use the coupons, but my passion is teaching them how to give back," said Larry Pierce. And you can see what they're doing. They're really stepping forward."
"I could bring a box or two over here by myself, but with our members you see what we got, we got seven car loads," Pierce added.
This is the second time this year The Coupon Patrol has donated items to Help our Homeless Veterans and Citizens.
Six months ago, their donation helped feed and clothe over 1,000 people.
"We're retired military," said volunteer Cathy Holt, "and I absolutely love doing this. It's the greatest."
"These people don't need to suffer any more than they're suffering," said Rusty Loiselle, founder of Help our Homeless Veterans and Citizens. "It's folks like (Coupon Patrol) that really help the situation and give them the good, hot food that they need."
