The Elkmont Red Devils played the Ardmore Tigers at Ardmore, January 6. Led by Cole Glass' double double of 23 points and 13 rebounds, the Devils beat Ardmore 59-48.
There was a good crowd with lots of emotion at the Ardmore Gym last night, which is always fun to be a part of. It lends itself to exciting basketball. The Elkmont Red Devils were much more energetic warming up for the game and seemed more focused in comparison to the Clements game earlier in the week. The team came out in a much faster game tempo, which was a good sign that they would play well.
Cole Glass got the tip and at 7:30 into the game, Daniel Logan scored the first points of the game with a three pointer that hit nothing but net. Cole Glass went strong to the basket, twisted up for a shot and was fouled. Shooting 2 free throws, he added 2 more points to the score. Elkmont was up 5-0 before Ardmore scored at 6 minutes. The Elkmont defense held the Tigers to 3 points as the Devils went up 10-3. Cole Glass, Andrew Labathe and Daniel Logan went to the bench in a one-minute time frame and the Red Devils didn’t regroup in time to stop Ardmore from roaring back in a 9-3 run. The Tigers closed the gap to 13-12, Elkmont, before Logan and Glass were both back in. The Red Devils drilled a three pointer that was offset by an Ardmore layup making the score 16-15 as the first quarter clock ticked down. Cole Glass made a 6 footer to put the Red Devils ahead 18-15 when the quarter ended.
The Ardmore Tigers played hard the second quarter with a tough defense that kept the lane packed and difficult for the Elkmont offense to make easy baskets. Cole Glass continued to work the post, taking his opponent to the basket, drawing a lot of fouls. The Red Devils’ 3 point shooters, Huseth and Logan, both went to the bench with fouls and saw limited playing time. At the half, Cole Glass had 13 points, 6 rebounds and Daniel Logan added 7 points to make the score 28 – 25, Red Devils.
Skyler Gant scored the first Elkmont points in the third quarter with 2 straight baskets to put the lead out to 32 – 25. He also scored the last points of the quarter with an old-fashioned 3-point play. Gant drove under the basket and flipped in a shot from the other side as he was fouled. He stepped up to line sinking the free throw making the score 42 – 32.
With a 10-point lead at .48 seconds in the fourth quarter, the starters except for Skyler Gant went to the bench. The Ardmore Tigers continued to play hard, hitting 2 free throws, stealing the ball and putting up a three that just missed. Matthew Barnes was fouled and stepped up to the line hitting 2 for 2. Ardmore missed their following 3 point shot and Elkmont held on to their lead, winning 59 – 48.
Cole Glass had his best game of the season with a double double, 23 points and 13 rebounds. Skyler Gant and Daniel Logan had double digits as well with 13 and 10 points and 8 rebounds apiece. The Red Devils up their record to 11- 5 with an upcoming Area game vs. Danville, January 10 at home.
