ELKMONT FFA TAKE A FIELD TRIP

Future Farmers of America students from Ardmore, East Limestone and Elkmont high schools and the East Limestone Family, Career and Community Leaders of America students toured several Limestone County locations last week. They met several individuals and farmers with a vested interest in agriculture.

The students toured the Limestone Farmers Cooperative where they learned how the cooperative is operated and managed. Students were informed about services available for area farmers as well as the different chemicals the co-op uses on a variety of crops and how fertilizers are stored, used and hauled.

The Ardmore, East Limestone and Elkmont students also had the opportunity to lean about fertilizer and seeding prescriptions, which is one of the newest technologies available at the cooperative.
Students later toured Isom’s Orchard on U.S. 72 where Wes Isom explained the ins and outs of the fifth generation family operation. The tour allowed students to experience the first day of cider production. They also walked through the Isom’s apple and peach orchards and large-scale vegetable gardens as well as learned about the intense maze of naturally spring-fed irrigation systems used to keep the operation going.
