HELP RED CABOOSE CELEBRATE AN ANNIVERSARY

I doesn't seem like we have been in
business for seven Years. Time does fly when you are having fun. We have had about fourteen Grammy Award winners perform at our place along with some of the greatest songwriters in the business. Hearing the stories about what inspired their creation is almost as entertaining as the song itself. You will have another chance this Saturday, February 28 to see these wonderful artists.  It will be our seventh anniversary show at the Red Caboose.

Songwriter/Producer Phillip White and his lovely wife Amber will be our headliners. Phillip has written many of the hit songs you hear today. Amber will entertain you with many of her great songs. She has fans that plan to drive all the way from Florida to see her performance.

Opening the evening will be a local favorite, Miss Lillian Glanton. Lillian performed for us earlier this year and the response was fantastic. She is only 14 yrs. old and will amaze you with her singing and songwriting skills.

HILL SPIRIT'S THOUGHTS ABOUT THE NEXT FEW WEEKS

Repost from last Wednesday:

We are used to having some spring weather by now but don't plan on putting that garden in anytime soon. Elkmont is going to have a short warmup this weekend and then winter will be back.  It will be cool to cold the next few weeks. How cold? The maps don't agree. I'm planning for very cold.

from WeatherBell Analytics
*PINK MEANS BRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While this weekend will be messy, don't think it will be a long term thing. However, later next week and maybe into the first of March, there is a good chance of winter weather.  There will be plenty of moisture for the cold to work with. Hill Spirit has seen some maps that still have snow on the ground for us into March 7.  Hope that changes; can't wait for those spring warm temperatures.

from WeatherBell Analytics

HILL SPIRIT THOUGHTS:
Hill Spirit looks at the weather information  at least a week or more out and plan for the worst case. If you do too, you will have time to get ready before everyone gets crazy. Two things will happen either you get the chance to be  pleasantly surprised when the weather doesn't happen or if it does, you don't have to worry and you can help your neighbor.  Preparing just when the weather man says the sky is falling will surely cause you to run here and there and not know what to do.

NEWS ABOUT LEAH

The Decatur Daily has a nice article about Elkmont's Leah Seibert in its February 23 edition.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Wearing her Elkmont High cheerleader uniform, Leah Seibert stood in front of the home crowd during a basketball timeout and participated in an enthusiastic cheer routine.  For a high school teenager, it might sound like an ordinary moment. But for Seibert, it was part of the journey to recovery.

The road to recovery is not complete. Seibert still is receiving aggressive chemotherapy treatment, and because of low blood cell counts, she has spent multiple stints in the hospital. The most recent was during the first week of February.

"You can't take anything for granted," Seibert said. "That's one of life's biggest lessons."

COLD? IS IT A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME?

This is a repost from Feb 2014 of one of those "just because" posts that Hill Spirit puts together because it is interesting and something to think about.

You have read all about man made climate change, "global warming" but what if that idea is wrong and we are really headed the other way.  This is bits and pieces from another article I was reading today.  It is all about how sunspots "hot sun, cool sun" affect the weather.

The German Herald after the record cold start in 2013 wrote:
"German meteorologists say that the start of 2013 is now the coldest in 208 years - and now German media has quoted Russian scientist Dr Habibullo Abdussamatov from the St. Petersburg Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory as showing it is proof as he said earlier that we are heading for a "Mini Ice Age."
Talking to German media the scientist who first made his prediction in 2005 said that after studying sunspots and their relationship with climate change on Earth, we are now on an "unavoidable advance towards a deep temperature drop."

Building on observations made by English astronomer Walter Maunder, Dr Abdussamatov, said he had found that the Earth cools and warms in a 200-year cycles.

The last big freeze known as the Little Ice Age was between 1650 and 1850 which he said coincided with Maunder’s findings that there had been no sunspots between 1645 and 1715.

Writing in his blog, Abdussamatov said: "The last global decrease of temperature (the most cold phase of the Little Ice Age) was observed not only in Europe, North America and Greenland, but also in any other part of the world during the Maunder minimum of sunspot activity and of the total solar irradiance in 1645–1715 years.

"All channels in the Netherlands were frozen, glaciers were on the advance in Greenland and people were forced to leave their settlements, inhabited for several centuries.

"The Thames river in London and Seine in Paris were frozen over every year. Humanity has always been prospering during the warm periods and suffering during the cold ones. The climate has never been and will never be stable."

Now the Russian scientists says the new mini Ice Age will begin next year and will last for 200 years.

"The tendency of decrease in the global Earth temperature started in 2006–2008 will temporarily pause in 2010–2012.
"The cooling can be similar to the one observed in the whole Europe, North America and Greenland in 1645–1715 in the period of Maunder minimum of solar luminosity and sunspot activity when the temperature will fall by 1–1.5 Celsius degrees down to the mark of the so-called Maunder minimum.

"The regular period of climatic minimum (the stage of global cooling) will last for approximately 45–65 years and the new warming will eventually come afterwards within the regular 2-century solar cycle.

"The deep cooling is expected to be regularly replaced by warming only by the beginning of 22nd century.

"A forecast of the global cooling by the middle of the 21st century and of the new 200-year cycle followed by global warming in the beginning of the 22nd century is shown on the figure."

Instead of adjusting the hardiness zones north, the USDA may have to adjust them south. Based on Newman 1980, if a true Maunder set in, conditions now experienced in Iowa will shift south to Arkansas.

HILL SPIRIT THOUGHT:

Interesting.... you might want to add more insulation to your house and wrap those water lines this year. Take advantage of the propane pre-buy program this summer if you use gas. Early trends for 2015-2016 winter are indicating another one like this year.
