Xplosive. Xciting. Xtraordinary. All of these words describe the play of Xavier Watkins as he led the Elkmont Midgets to a 21-0 victory over the Clements Colts on Saturday night in the season opener. The Midgets do not keep formal stats but, according to Head Coach Anthony Lawrence, Watkins gained in excess of 150 yards on his two touchdown runs alone. Isaiah Sutherland scored the remaining touchdown on a quarterback keeper down the middle on fourth-and-goal. Watkins and Sutherland also scored two of the three extra points, with the third scored on a run by Colby Scroggins. After the game, the coaching staff praised the workhorse effort of the offensive line for creating the holes that led to these three scores. Jedidiah Sutherland also had a long run, while Skyler Morris had a large gain following a pass reception. The word that best describes the parents and supporters after the opening game: Xstatic.
The Midgets’ next game is against East Limestone at 4:00 pm on Saturday at Athens Middle School.
