Offense
The Indians look to improve this year after averaging just 9.4 points per game in 2011. Sam Howard takes over at quarterback and gives the Indians a passing threat. Freshmen Tyler Jeffreys is battling Howard, and Lorenzo Madden will be used in the "Wildcat" formation.
There is good depth at running back with Ryan Carpenter, Norris Warren, Sydney Roberson and Myron Smith. Tobias Qualls provides a big-play threat at wide receiver with John David Isbell, Brent Minor, Anthony West and King providing good depth. Doug Tucker and Alex Aday anchor the offensive line at the guard spots and Obed Lumbrerus gives the Indians good size at tackle. "We have a chance to be good on offense," Carpenter said. "I really like the offense coach Jeffreys has brought here. Now it's just a matter of us executing."
Defense
Defense should be a strength with Tyler Lott at middle linebacker. Dee Hardin, Cody Gargis and Aday will also see time at linebacker. Tucker, Dee Qualls and Shun Harrison leading the defensive line. Carpenter, Isbell, Qualls, West and Smith lead a deep secondary.
Intangibles
Colbert County plays in a tough region in Class 3A, Region 8. In addition to state runner-up Madison Academy, Lauderdale County also made a deep playoff run. The region will have a new look with perennial powerhouse Deshler moving down from Class 4A.
"Our region is brutal and our non-region games are tough as well," Jeffreys said. "Having only four home games makes it even tougher. "The key for this team is to get off to a good start. These guys have not won much, so getting some confidence early is important. If we can do that and keep getting better each week we have a chance for a good season."
Dale Jeffreys makes his debut as Colbert County’s new coach. Jeffreys, a former Colbert County player, spent the past 15 years as head coach at Red Bay. ...
