Sitting at the back of the training room, far away from the din of teen chatter, was Jack Batts, vice president of the Alabama Cattlemen's Association. Batts gazed at the teens, some of whom were decked out in jeans and boots, and remarked how he saw a bit of himself in them.
“Those blue and gold (FFA) coats go back over 50-something years,” the 68-year-old Batts said with a chuckle. “These children are an example to others. Most people have no idea how many hours they've got tied up (in raising cattle). I think what they're doing is tremendous.”
Categories included livestock judging, tractor driving and FFA Creed speaking. The goal is to help students prepare for careers in agriculture.
