HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE RED CABOOSE?

Gary Compton is not usually the guy doing the picking and grinning on the stage but he is the owner of the Red Caboose in Elkmont.

During WAFF's recent visit, he strumed some familiar songs. "I started out, after I retired, wanting something to do." And "do" he did, renovating the entire building."Music's always been a passion of mine. and my youngest son is in the business in Nashville. 
He is a producer and works with a writer's group. So that gives me an opportunity to have a place to draw the taken from."

Songwriters come from all over to perform. When the Red Caboose is filled to capacity and there is talent on stage, people may look up and think, I don't recognize the face or the name but they will recognize the song.  "And we have historically required that if you want to play here on a main event that you need to have a notable cut.  

We're going into our 9th year now and it has really been a pleasure. We have had 14 Grammy award winners here." says Compton.

"One of my favorites is Mr. Roger Murrah.  He wrote the song, "Don't Rock The Jukebox". And he is originally from Limestone County. He is in the songwriters' hall of fame."

He points out photographs of others who played here. 

"Good friend of mine, Phillip White. He is from over around Anderson. He is a professional songwriter and wrote the song, "I'm a survivor", by Reba McEntire." says Compton. 

"That's Jim McBride.  Jim McBride used to be in his early years a postman in Huntsville. 

This guy right here, Jerry Salley. He has written over 600 songs that were recorded."

So if you decide your in the mood for some music and you want to come to Elkmont, all you have to do is look for the landmark, The Red Caboose, and the actual building is directly across the street.  That is where you are going to find everyone picking and grinning in Bobby's Bama.
