DON'T LOOK FOR A COOL SUMMER THIS YEAR

  • Widespread warmer than normal summer for U.S.
  • Analogs to summers with El Niños flipping to La Niña used
  • Active hurricane season expected
  • Sneak peak at next winter

There is a lot of agreement for a hot summer. It is a hugely different forecast from the last three summers, and while not all the way back to 2010 with the extreme heat, it is going to be a much more impactful summer than the last three.

With an above normal hot summer on the horizon, try to get that summer garden in as soon as the ground warms up.  You can put black plastic over your soil and that will speed up the process.  It also does a number on sprouting weeds, making them less of a problem. Take the plastic off after you plant your garden.  It will make the soil too hot for your babies. March is supposed to cool and wet for us in Elkmont but is compared to averages.  Once it gets over 90, your plants aren't as happy.
