IF YOU CAN'T GO TO THE BEACH....

Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) came to Elkmont School last week and gave our students a hands on experience with creatures from the Alabama Coastline and Gulf of Mexico. Our high school science teacher, Mrs. Brazeal, arranged for the BayMobile to visit the Hilltop.

The BayMobile is DISL's traveling classroom, allowing Sea Lab educators to bring marine science lessons to schools all across the state.

Its primary mission is to visit schools whose students do not have the opportunity or means to visit the Sea Lab on a field trip. By bringing some of the beach to them, BayMobile brings fascinating marine creatures and compelling lessons about the ocean to classrooms and eager audiences.

The beautifully adorned BayMobile vehicle is a science classroom on wheels.  It is packed with preserved specimens to captivate students by directly involving ithemn dynamic hands-on activities.

Science swims to life as BayMobile’s touch lab grants audiences the unique opportunity to touch the arms of an octopus, observe the teeth of a shark, and feel the scales of native Gulf of Mexico fish species.

Its primary mission is to visit underserved schools whose students do not have the opportunity or means to visit the Sea Lab on a field trip. By bringing some of the beach to them, BayMobile is spreading awareness and understanding about our coastal environments, and how no matter how far from the coast, we are all connected to it. Along with the opportunity to touch marine specimens, Sea Lab educators bring enthusiasm and knowledge about a variety of subjects. Topics include the watershed system, plants and animals native to the Gulf Coast, and the impact of oil spills on the environment. - See more at: http://www.disl.org/educational-programs/baymobile/#sthash.TvwO2N4G.dpuf
