Limestone/Morgan county FFA chapters organized a welding contest between the counties last week. The contest was held at the welding deferment at Calhoun Community College. Elkmont HS FFA placed 1st in the county and 3rd overall. Left to right Jay Mullis, Cody Watkins, Jonathan Craig, and Ethan Shores.
The contest consisted of each participant doing a 3-pass on each side of a T-Joint using MIG* on one and ARC* on the other. The judges then scored each participants welds to come up with a team score.
*What is Arc Welding?
Arc welding is a method of joining two
pieces of metal into one solid piece. To do this, the heat of an
electric arc is concentrated on the edges of two pieces of metal to be
joined. The metal melts, while the edges are still molten, additional
melted metal is added. This molten mass then cools and solidifies into
one solid piece.

practices, so there is learning curve associated with MIG welding, even
for experienced welders. For example, MIG welders may need to push the
welding puddle away from them and along the seam.
