While traveling to Montgomery on Wednesday, the students visited
Locked-In, Birmingham. This was a team-building exercise where 8 people were
locked in a room and given a one-hour time limit. The team had to use clues
found inside the room to “unlock” the door.
On Thursday, the students participated in the Leadership Conference at
the Montgomery Performing Arts Center. There were students from around the
state in attendance. Some of the items on the agenda included: a business
meeting of Alabama FCCLA, key note speaker—Patrick Grandy, and special
presentations from Nate Wells, Type 1 patient and Frances McGowin with Service
Dogs Alabama.
On Friday, three Elkmont students competed in the FCCLA State STAR
Events Competition.
Mackenzie McCart, eighth grade student competed in Focus on Children. This is an individual or team event that recognizes participants who use Family and Consumer Sciences skills to plan and conduct a child development project that has a positive impact on children and the community. Mackenzie presented a nutrition lesson to the Kindergarten here at Elkmont. Her focus of the project was to encourage children to eat a variety of foods every day. This was the first year of competition for Mackenzie! With her project, Mackenzie brought home a Gold Medal. We are so proud of how Mackezie represented Elkmont.
Juniors, Alyssa Smith and
Christina Stacy, competed in National Programs
in Action, Leadership. This is an individual or team event that recognizes participants
who explain how the FCCLA Planning Process was used to implement a national
program project. Alyssa and Christian chose to raise awareness about childhood
cancer. They chose to focus their project on classmate, Leah Seibert.
Their
project displayed how they used their leadership skills to plan and facilitate
a fundraiser and community service project in honor of Leah and her battle with
cancer. This was the first year that these two competed! With their project,
Alyssa and Christina brought home a Silver Medal.
We are so proud of how Alyssa
and Christina represented Elkmont. These two students still have a chance of
representing Elkmont at the National Leadership Conference this summer in San
Diego, California.
